“I’VE DUTIFULLY SHOWN up three days in a row, and at the end of each day, I’ve told him to fuck off. I even thought I was creative with it last night.” Kinley sat in a comfortable chair in the front lobby of King Security. It was the only place she hadn’t used to hide from Hendrick, and the only place he hadn’t looked for her.

“What did you do?”

“Front kick, uppercut, cock, knee. I spelled it out for him with each strike to make sure he understood.” Kinley had chanted like a cheerleader and Hendrick had cupped his groin while falling to his knees. Then she’d stormed out of there with a finger over her shoulder.

Sophie threw her head back with a laugh. “I’d never get away with that with Dak.” She tipped back the small glass she held between her fingers. The two women had brought down a bottle of Dak’s whiskey and sprawled themselves in cushions, sipping away until someone discovered them. A closed sign gleamed outside the front door, and had been there since her father threatened to send someone after her. They weren’t letting any clients inside.

Kinley drained the last of her first drink and held it out for Sophie to pour more. “He isn’t this harsh when he works with you and Ember, is he?”

“No.” Sophie’s softness appeared when she whispered. She topped off her drink as well. “But Dak isn’t always easy on me and King isn’t always easy on Ember.” Her tone was still soft. It wasn’t the same as what Hendrick had been putting her through.

Some hours, he’d been silent, forcing her to spar with attack after attack. Others he’d try to taunt her, but when his taunts didn’t work, he’d stopped. But he’d learned her hatred for Cassius was her motivation, and he used it. He dangled the image of her holding a knife to his throat like the proverbial carrot.

“You two are about to go into a dangerous den.” Sophie’s lips twisted as if that was a good excuse. Except it was. Kinley knew his reasons. But…

“His touch burns.” She let the alcohol run down her throat to mimic the effect.

Understanding dawned in Sophie’s flared eyes. “What kind of touch?”

“Every single one.” It was almost enough to distract her, but when he tried to use it to distract her, running his hands over her middle or down her arm, she had to force herself not to falter. The hardest one was when his hand circled her neck. They’d been nose to nose so many times in the past days, trading desires with only a look.

Infuriating.

Calming.

Heating.

“Have you two…?” Sophie let her hands finish the question for her, waving them back and forth as if that meant something.

“Not since the night before the bachelorette party.” But with every figurative foot of distance their sparring put between them, the tension thickened just as much. Kinley wanted him, and there was nothing she could do to stop herself. It didn’t matter that she intended
